Rancho Zayante and Felton
Rancho Zayante was first deeded to Joaquin Buelna in 1834 who was the arcade of Branciforte. He then regranted the property to Joseph majors who eventually sold the property to Isaac Graham from Kentucky. Isaac erected the first lumber mill in California on the creek in 1842. Two covered bridges were built in the area, one over the creek on Glen Canyo road and one where wagons had been fording the river to Felton for years. The road from Santa Cruz to Felton had been cut and a bridge across the river into town was desired for all weather access. Money was raised by the townsfolk and a first bridge was put in in 1876. The Felton covered bridge was raised in 1892. Mr. And Mrs. George May started the first hotel in felton called the Big Trees Hotel which later became the Felton Hotel. Mrs. Day’s brother George Collins built the road from big Trees to Felton and established a toll for its use which is still visible as the Toll House Resort today.
