Worship by the Sea: Camp Meetings and Seaside Resorts
History of the church camps which began after the Civil War as an alternative to more traditional resorts for the wealthy or working class. The resorts had a traditional design which included a tabernacle (sometimes octagonal) in the center with a grand avenue to the beach and then circles of similarly built tents or houses around it. The article makes several references and has photos and maps of Garfield Park in Santa Cruz. Also included is discussion of the role of church camps in society and who attended them such as middle class families looking for a wholesome vacation. These establishments declined towards the end of the 1800s as escape resorts by the beach changed into summer homes in residential areas.
