Great Scot

Article is about Alister McKenzie of Scotland who was famous for designing over 400 golf courses around the world including Cypress Point in Monterey. He first trained to be a physician and served in World War I as a doctor in the army. He made connections with military leaders in England for his work on designing camoflage for field hospitals. He decided to focus his attention and career on something that would keep him outside in nature which he loved and also involved in sports which he felt was one of the best things we could do for our health and well-being. he designed many famous golf courses and worked with golf pro Bobby Jones on the PGA course in Atlanta. His connection to the Monterey Bay Area is through Marion Hollis who with her financial backer proposed using land that was part of the Rancho Carbanero land grant to build her own golf course. This course called Pasatiempo is not as well known as Cypress but has all the hallmarks of Mackenzie’s artistic touch.
