Mr. Oakes was clearing his yard of debris in order to allow the road to be widened by his home and he was found dead in his yard. He had recently talked with Cora Cox and B. Vandergrift and they did not sense any problems. Mr. Oakes was an agent with Southern Pacific until his retirement recently and was a strong proponent for the road improvements planned.
