Biographical Sketch of Herman Irwin by his nephew William Hyde Irwin

Biography details the various family members and how Herman Irwin came to live in Ben Lomond on land purchased from Judge Logan in Brookdale in 1904. their house was originally the cookhouse for the mill. It was expanded and an orchard was established. The house was remodeled and improved and Herm and his wife Hattie moved in in 1925. Herm with Charles Smith created the Rckgas Company and became the first distributor of liquid petroleum. Herm was very active in theatricals and played trombone in a band in Ben Lomond. He was involved in the fire department and was fire commission for may years. He was an active member of the Brookdale Improvement Club and served two years in the Santa Cruz County Grand Jury and served on the Santa Cruz Count Selective Service Board. Avid hunter and fisherman known for his great sense of humor.
