Women of the wild frontier
Women often came out as missionaries, wives, teachers. In some communities up to 15% of the women there were unmarried or widowed. Women were expected to do hard chores, take care of many children, help with the farm or ranch. They shocked Easterners by riding horseback like men and they were early fighters for voting rights, with four Western states having the right to vote before the women in the East even began to get involved.
