When being in 'the family way' wasn't public
Pregnancy was never acknowledged or discussed in the 1800s and women found it a challenge to find clothes to fit their expanding waistlines. The article details some of the options used by women and notes that much of what we know on this subject is gained from private journals of women. Georgiana Kirby kept a journal and wrote what it was like to be an educated settler surrounded by semi illiterate locals and the role she played in educating young brides of 12 or 14 while handling her own pregnancies.
