AS and NB Hicks
History of the Hicks family starting with A.S Hicks and his brother Napoleon who lived in Georgia. They decided to move to California and run a lumber mill. they first settled in Santa Clara where they farmed. they were joined by their two slaves later who came by “Underground Railroad”. AB and Napoleon moved to Santa Cruz to begin lumbering however the freed slaves stayed in Santa Clara. They had several mills in Ben Lomond and on Love Creek that were destroyed in floods and fires. Nathanial eventually moved to San Bernardino and Achilles moved to Scotts Valley and started a farm. His son Nathaniel joined him later after staying with family during his early years. Nathan lived at a home on Granite Creek near the Four Square Church, he was a dairyman and lumberman and used to transport lumber to the tannery on Protero Street near the current Salz Tannery site. His son Arthur Hicks was born in Scotts Valley on Granite Creek Road. AS’s second wife was from the Errington family who were major land owners in Scotts Valley (Santa’s Village, Carbenero Canyon)
