Story of John Brown's Song

Origin of the song was a verse inserted to tease a soldier with the same name as the famous John Brown. The song with the improvised verses spread rapidly. Julia Howe who was a friend of John Brown heard it being sung and decided to write out all of the verses including the one that mentions John Brown. The hymn was sung widely and has been considered for the national anthem by several people including Teddy Roosevelt.
