Conelly, Smith are man, woman of the year
Smith first served as hostess for the Brookdale Lodge in 1929. She was a society write for the Santa Cruz Evening News in the 1920's, Conelly's first job locally was as a reporter for the News and later the Santa Cruz Sentinel. Both then went into real estate and were friendly competitors. Smith was an officer of the Valley Property Owners Association for many years aiding in the construction of the dam at Ben Lomond Park and the orginal Scottish Days celebration. Conelly was the county;s first environmental health officer and guided development of sanitation facilities throughout the county. He organized the first Civil Defense program. The article lists many other honors and accoplishments of both recipients.
