1301 FROM COUNTY

A total of 1301 persons of Japanese ancestry were excluded from Santa Cruz county in the spring of 1942, according to U.S. census bureau records. Of this number 931 were citizens and 370 were aliens.

The total excluded from Monterey county was 2247 -- 1530 citizens and 717 aliens. Many of this number were Monterey county residents of the Pajaro valley area.

ICKES CALLS FOR AID

WASHINGTON (UP) - Secretary of the Interior Ickes Monday said that those Japanese eligible for relocation or return to the west coast "have been found by the army authorities to be loyal citizens or law-abiding aliens."

He called on all Americans and especially local officials and public and private agencies on the west coast, including church and welfare groups, the American Legion, and other veteran organizations to "aid these people and by so doing show their devotion to American principles of charity, justice and democracy. They are entitled to their full constitutional and legal rights, and perhaps to something more than ordinary consideration because they have really suffered as a direct result of war."

Ickes said that of 110,000 persons originally evacuated from the west coast, more than 35,000 have been relocated under WRA procedures outside the Pacific coast area. The "great majority" of relocated evacuees, he added, "have become satisfactorily adjusted" and will want to have other members of their families still at centers "rejoin them in their new homes."
