DIED: WITHINGTON, In Santa Cruz April 9, Peter F. Withington, aged 87 years, 2 months and 26 days, a native of Ohio.

Peyton Street Resident Dies

Peter F. Withington died last night at his home at 33 Peyton St. where he has resided with his wife a number of years.

Mr. Withington had lived here for 16 years. He was born in Ohio 87 years ago, and his wife Mrs. Mattie Withington, survives him.

The body is at the Chase undertaking parlors.

Passing of P.S. Withington.

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me;
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I pass out to sea.

So, with the fading day there came to a peaceful close, on Tuesday evening, the long and eventful life of one of the west's early settlers, in the death of Peter S. Withington, at his late home on Peyton Street.

Born at Ashland, Ohio, 87 years ago, his early life was spent amid historical events in various parts of the middle west. A veteran of the Civil war he served for three years in the 13th Wisconsin infantry.

Possessing a wonderful memory of incidents and events connected with the early days of the opening of the west to settlers, he often entertained his hearers with vivid accounts of his experiences with Indian warfare, and the dangers and hardships connected with pioneering in Montana and Wyoming. It was a genuine pleasure to listen to his interesting narratives and marvel at his exceptional memory of time and place.

Coming to California he farmed for several years in Sonoma county, later locating in this city, where he has led a quiet and retired life.

Besides his devoted and affection wife of many years there are left to mourn his passing two sons, H.S. of Forsythe, Mont. and L.H. Withington of Horse Fly, B.C.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Chase undertaking parlors this afternoon at 3 o'clock, following which the remains will be shipped for cremation and the ashes forwarded to Fort Custer national cemetery, Montana to be interred beside those of his youngest son who died a veteran of the Spanish American war.

The sympathy of a host of friends is extended to the bereaved. Of a cheerful, kindly nature the deceased readily made friends with old and young alike, among whom his passing will be a distinct loss.

Funeral Services for P. Withington

Funeral services over the late Peter Withington were held yesterday afternoon at Chase's undertaking parlors, where friends gathered for the service, which was conducted by the Rev. Charles Leachman of Calvary church.

The hymns "The Gates of Gold" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," were sung by Mrs. Virginia Smith and Mrs. Mary Croop.

The body was shipped last evening to Mount Olivet for cremation.
