William White
Pioneer Cemetery, Watsonville

Prof. William White died last Friday [Editor's note: May 8] and his funeral took place from the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon. A large concourse of friends paid the last tribute of respect to his friendship and life work, and his brothers of the Odd Fellows attended in a body and conducted the last services at the grave. Prof. White was stricken with paralysis in the Sandwich islands, about two years ago. He partially recovered and with his family came to Watsonville- the home of his wife's parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. B. Allison, of Pajaro, and the scene of his earlier success as a teacher. For some time before his death he had been breaking down, and on Friday he passed from this life. He was born in Boston sixty years ago. He graduated from Williams College, was Professor of Latin in Oahu College, Honolulu in the early sixties, returned to California and was successively principal of Santa Cruz, Watsonville, and San Jose, and for fourteen years was teacher of mathematics in the San Francisco Boy's High School. He also taught in the Commercial High School and was assistant principal of the Washington Grammar schools, San Francisco. He was President of the State Teachers Association during 1883, and was for many years ranked among the leading educators of this slope. A wife and two sons are left to mourn his demise.
