James E West At One Time the Driver of the Soquel Stage
On the morning of Sat. Oct. 13, James E. West, a veteran of the Civil War passed away at the soldiers home he was 79 years.
Born in Marchise Me., in 1838 he became a member of the regimental band of the 6th ME volunteers serving with distinction until 1864 which year he came to California with his bride.
With the exception of a brief period passed in Idaho, decedent resided in this and the adjoining counties of Santa Cruz and Monterey until the death 16 months ago in San Jose of his highly esteemed and beloved wife Mrs. Georgia West. After the loss of his life companion, their having passed 53 years together, Mr. West chose to avail himself of the privilege of the Soldiers Home, where he would have the companionship of other veterans and be free to visit with his children and outside friends at will.
His death came as a result of a fall at the home.
He was a member of the GAR, and of the Masonic order.
Besides a host of friends, two children are left to mourn this estimable man, Miss Carrie V West of 1312 Jackson St. San Francisco, and George E. West a prominent business man in Colfax California.
