Christian Werner

Departed this life at 25 minutes pat twelve o'clock this afternoon at his residence on Center Street. Mr. Werner has been seriously ill for several days and his end was not unexpected. Mr. Werner has been a well known and popular citizen of this place for many years. He leaves a wife and four children and a brother John Werner, residing in this city.

Santa Cruz Sentinel (January 26, 1886)

Chris F. Werner breathed his last at noon Monday. He contracted a severe cold a few weeks ago, and it developed into pneumonia. Ten minutes before his death he deeded his property to his wife and children. Chris was a whole souled, genial man, with a large circle of friends who will mourn his loss. He was a native of Germany, and in his forty-fifth year. For nearly twenty years he has been a resident of Santa Cruz, and engaged in the saloon business. During the civil war he was stationed in the barracks at Benicia. He was Adjutant of W.H.L. Wallace Post, G.A.R., a member of Branciforte Lodge, I.O.O.F., and of the Knights of Honor. The deceased possessed a good bass voice, and frequently assisted at local entertainments. The flag flying at half mast over I.O.O.F. Hall is in honor of his memory.

Santa Cruz Surf (January 27 1886)

The funeral of Christian F Werner which was held this afternoon was one of the largest turnouts that Santa Cruz has witnessed in some time. The remains were taken in charge by the Branciforte Lodge IOOF of which deceased was a member. The funeral procession was headed by Pythian Band, behind came a firing squad of eight from W.H.L. Wallace Post GAR, the J.F. Reynolds Post, G.A.R., and the Branciforte Lodge IOOF which acted as escort, these were followed by a long line of carriages containing nearly all the prominent citizens of Santa Cruz.

At the cemetery the funeral ceremonies were conducted principally by the Odd Fellows, [Rev. F. Reiser spoke briefly and there was also singing by a double quartette] the firing squad from Wallace Post firing three volleys over the grave. Mr. Werner has been a resident of Santa Cruz for over 20 years and was universally liked and respected. He was adjutant of the W.H. L. Wallace Post.
