Civil War Veteran Called by Death

Another of the old guard of civil war veterans answered farewell taps on Saturday evening, when Geo. W. Wells passed away at his home on Lincoln street Saturday evening. Mr. Wells has not been able to greet his many friends on the streets for some weeks past and the real seriousness of his illness was realized by those closest to him for some days past. Mr. Wells has been a familiar figure on the streets of Santa Cruz for many years past and was compelled to make his rounds in a wheel chair as a result of an operation made several years ago when he had his leg amputated.

Like all soldiers of the old school Mr. Wells was intensely patriotic and took great interest in the social and material welfare of the G.A.R. and took particular pride in relating reminiscence of war days among his old comrades.

Mr. Wells was born in Connecticut 81 years ago and during his long residence in Santa Cruz has always maintained interest in all matters that pertained to the advancement of the city. He was also a faithful member of the Masons and was rarely out of his accustomed place in the lodge room. Mr. Wells was also a regular church attendant and in religious affiliation as a member of the Methodist church. When he first arrived in Santa Cruz county, Mr. Wells settled at Soquel.

Besides the surviving wife, the deceased leaves a son and daughter, George Wells of Vallejo, and Mrs. Edith Harmon of Midas. The former is still in the restaurant business, a vocation he followed during his residence here.

The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at two p.m. from the parlors of C.C. Chase on Walnut avenue.

Funeral of Late George W. Wells

The funeral services over the late George W. Wells were held yesterday afternoon from Chase's undertaking parlors, where many friends were present, including groups from the Masons, order of Eastern Star and G.A.R.

The church service was conducted by the pastor of the deceased, Rev. I.B. Bristol of the First Methodist church, and this was followed by the G.A.R. service.

The hymns "Savior Lead Me Lest I Stray," and "The Tide Flowing Out" were sung by Mrs. Benj. Smith and Mrs. Z.T. Croop.

The service at the cemetery was conducted by the Masons.
