An Early Settler Crosses the Divide
After a Long and Honorable Life Danson C. Tolman Obeys the Summons and Passes on Peacefully

This morning at 1:45 o'clock Danson C. Tolman, an old and highly respected resident of this community passed peacefully to the Great Beyond. Deceased had been in poor health for a number of years as the result of stomach trouble, but it was not until April 18th that he took his bed never to arise again. Since the first day of his last illness it was known to his loved ones that the odds were greatly against him, owing to his advanced age and undermined constitution, but his departure hence will be a source of profound sorrow to his numerous friends.

A carpenter by trade he followed that line of business at times and participated in the construction of a number of buildings in adjoining counties. It was he who erected the old Wharf at Moss Landing.

He was a member of R.L. McCook Post, G.A.R., of this city, having seen actual service with Company C. Eight Regiment, California Volunteers.

In the passing of Mr. Tolman this community loses a good citizen, a man who lived an honorable, upright life. He was scrupulously honest, kind hearted and industrious, and although of a somewhat retired nature, he was never the less a very companionable man when one knew him well.

His home life was pleasant, he being a kind husband and devoted father. Eight children came to bless his married life, six of whom are still living.

Besides a wife deceased leaves to mourn his taking the following children, to all of whom deepest sympathy is extended.: Mrs. James Hopkins, Watsonville; Mrs. Jessie Watkins, Kingman, Arizona; Mrs. Howard Willoughby, Pajaro Valley; Mrs. M.W. Tarr, Los Angeles; Geo. P. Tolman, San Francisco.

Funeral arrangements will be made later.
