Dies Last Evening After a Lingering Illness
Heman Jason Stone, a well known citizen died last evening at the family residence on Chestnut avenue, after a long illness.
Mr. Stone, since coming to Santa Cruz some years ago, has lived a quiet and retired life, being a prominent merchant at Salinas for many years before coming to make this city his home.
He was a native of New York, and 63 years of age, and leaves a wife and son, Hayes, A daughter, Mrs. Allie West, wife of Chas. E. West of Soquel, preceded her father in death some years ago.
Mr. Stone was a veteran of the Civil War, and was wounded n an engagement and has always suffered from the wounds received. He was a member of the Wallace-Reynolds Post, G.A.R. and took a great interest in this organization, serving the local post in nearly all the offices.
He was born in Lewis county, New York, and at the beginning of the war enlisted in the 14th N.Y. Infantry, serving until wounded in the battle of Malvern Hill. After recovering from the effects of his wound he again enlisted in the 20th New York Cavalry, serving until the close of the war. His death resulted from illness the result of the wounds received in battle.
He came to California in 1869, following his trade of stone mason in San Jose; then went to Salinas, where he resided until 1890, when he came to Santa Cruz.
He was a good citizen, honorable and upright, in politic, an ardent Republican and in church affiliation a Presbyterian, being a member of the local church and from which the funeral will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The G.A.R. who attended in a body, and participate in the services.
Mr. Stone purchased a home on Chestnut avenue a couple of years ago, and being a lover of flowers his garden always showed his work and was very attractive.
He had many friends, who sympathize with the wife in her bereavement.
