E.N. Stocking Dies in Southern City
E.N. Stocking, Civil war veteran, once a citizen of this county, died at his home at Riverside yesterday, aged 86 years. He first came to Santa Cruz about 34 years ago and settled in Blackburn gulch and later moved from there to Riverside, where he has since made his home with his son, G.A. Stocking.
He was the first white man in Santa Cruz county to realize and foresee the possibility of strawberry growing, and planted a large acreage on his ranch.
When a young man, Mr. Stocking enlisted at the outbreak of the war from Connecticut , in the infantry.
Four children survive, G.A. Stocking of Riverside, H.C. Stocking of Watsonville and Mrs. Anna Call of Monterey county. His wife died about three years ago and is buried here, and while funeral arrangements have not yet been completed, it is probable that the remains will be brought to Santa Cruz and buried beside his wife.
