Another Old Veteran Gone

Eugene E. Smith, residing east of Twin Lakes on Marine View died at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday. He had been sick and under the doctor's care since the latter part of last April.

Eugene E. Smith was born October 23, 1838 at Saline, Washtenaw Co. Michigan. His age at the time of death was 74 years, 8 months and 9 days. He left surviving him his widow, Mrs. Delia L. Smith, two daughters, Mrs. E.M. Hoffman of San Jose and Miss Minnie C. Smith residing with her mother, and two sons, Leonard B. and Frank G. Smith.

Mr. Smith had resided in California 22 years, three years at his last place of residence on Marine View and before several years in Seabright and Twin Lakes. He was engaged in the Real Estate business.

Military Service

Eugene E. Smith first enlisted as a member of Company D. 6th Michigan Vol. Inf., August 20 1861, and was appointed first sergeant of his company in which capacity he served until discharged June 30 1862.

Second Service

He was commissioned and mustered in as first lieutenant in the Ninth Regiment of Michigan Vol. Cavalry November 3, 1862 from which service he was discharged January 18, 1865 little over three years service in all. He was a member of Wallace Reynolds Post. G.A.R.

He was a true, brave soldier, a kindly and much loved neighbor and in all a true faithful loving husband, father.

The funeral will be held from the late residence, 3 Marine View tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock.
