Well Known Actress of Civil War Days Dies

Mrs. Carmelita Williamson Smith passed away in this city yesterday having passed her four score of years.

Born in the south, a native of Lexington, Ky., she was an actress especially well known during the days of the civil war.

At an early age the deceased married George Aiken, a contemporary and aide to Edwin Booth and other famous actors of the civil war period. As the wife of Aiken she played Ophelia and parts in "Ticket of Leave Man." She was with Aiken when Chicago built that actor a theater in order to keep him in the city.

She played in Fort Sumter with Booth just prior to the bombardment of that fort at the beginning of the war, and again played with him at the same place the day after the signing of peace terms.

Later Mrs. Aiken married Oscar M. Smith, an attorney, who preceded her in death by four years. She is survived by two daughters, Miss Carmelita Smith of 24 Maple St. and Mrs. E.A. McRoberts, 329 Laurel St.. both of this city.

The home of Mrs. Smith has been in Santa Cruz for about a year.

The body is at Chase's mortuary.
