Watsonville Pajaronian (November 6, 1890)

Shortly after noon, last Saturday, B.S. Riley dropped dead in J.H. Skow's place, near the town hall. The deceased had not been in very robust health for some time. On Saturday, morning last he transacted some business, and was persuaded by his son, Constable Riley, to remain in town until evening. During the afternoon in company with several friends, he attended the reception of Governor Pond at the Lewis House, and subsequently went into Skow's place to rest. While sitting at the table death summoned him and he expired without a struggle. The Coroner's jury returned a verdict that death resulted from heart disease. The deceased was a native of Jacksonville, Illinois, aged 62 years. Coming to California in 1855, he settled in this valley ten years later, and has resided here ever since, rearing a family of seven sons and three daughters to manhood and womanhood.
