John Quinn enlisted as a 2nd Lt in Co L of the 2nd California Cavalry on Sept. 23, 1861. Handwritten records indicate that his age was 66, however that seems quite high for a 2nd Lt. He was promoted to 1st Lt. on February 24, 1863 and participated in the Battle of Bear River in Washington Territory.
