Santa Cruz Sentinel (May 24, 1929)Hugh S. Murray Passes Away
Hugh Sidney Murray passed away at his home, 180 Pacheco Avenue, in this city May 22.
Born at Newtonards, Ireland, March 7, 1843, of Scotch-Welch decent, Murray was a direct descendent of the Earl of Mar, Scotland. He came to the United States with his parents when he was six weeks old and was raised at Tipton, Iowa. At the age of 17 years he enlisted in the United States Army, Company C, 24th Iowa, in the Civil War. He served until wounded at the battle of Champion Hills and was captured by Horey's division, where it is in history that the 24th Iowa lost a greater percentage than any other division. He lay on the battlefield and was given up for dead, with three gun shot wounds. He was taken to the hospital and after six months was discharged from service.
Mr. Murray came west by ox team in 1867 and settled in California, making his home at Lompoc, Gilroy and later Santa Cruz. He leaves a widow, Eliza Saunders Murray, four daughters and a son, E. Maude Coleman, Virginia City, Nevada; Walter E. Murray, Lompoc; Harriett E. Rowan and Jennie Rey Liege, Santa Barbara, and Mae Saunders Hall, Lompoc.
He was a member of Santa Cruz post, G.A.R. and formerly 50 years a Member of I.O.O.F., Lompoc California.
Interment will be in Lompoc, Santa Barbara County by the Odd Fellows, May 25.

Hugh Sidney Murray was born March 7, 1843 in Newtonards Ireland. On Sept. 9, 1862 and the age of 19 years he enlisted as a private in Co. C of the 24th Iowa Infantry. He was mustered into federal service on November 16, 1863.
After the war he moved to Lompoc, Santa Barbara County California where he farmed. While there he affiliated with Robert Anderson Post #66 G.A.R. in Lompoc.
He subsequently moved to Santa Cruz where he died at his home on May 5, 1929.
His remains were returned to Lompoc where they were interred in Lot 28 Gr 16 at Evergreen Cemetery where he has a non military Monument 3 1/2High with a G.A.R. marker.
