John A. McCune Called From the Duties of Life
About 11:30 a. m. today John A. McCune passed away at the home of Mrs. L. Neimyer on Brennan street, where he had taken temporary quarters in order to be in close with his physician. The deceased had been in failing health for some time and his condition grew sufficiently serious to warrant his physician in having him brought from Santa Cruz to Watsonville in order that he might him close attention. The patient had been here but little over a week. On account of the bad state of his blood a painful abscess formed on his side and an operation was performed the fore part of last week. Since that time his condition had grown worse up to the hour of his death.
John A. McCune was a native of Ohio, aged 61 years. He came to California many years ago and lived for some time near Santa Cruz. For twenty three years prior to his death, with the exception of the two years last past, he had lived with his family on a large ranch in Green Valley. He was one of the most prominent fruit growers in the valley. Being endowed with an investigating turn of mind he was decidedly progressive and did much to advance the fruit interest of this section. He served at one time as County Horticultural Commissioner and for several years capably filled the office of Deputy County Assessor.
As a business man he was far seeing and successful and accumulated a liberal share of this world's goods. Wishing to retire from the active duties of ranching and fruit growing, deceased erected a comfortable home in Santa Cruz about two years ago and moved thereto with his family, leaving the ranch in charge of his son-in-law C.H. Murphy.
Deceased was a kind husband, loving father, faithful friend and upright citizen. His death will bring sadness to the hearts of many, for his friends were legion.
A wife and two daughters- Mrs. C.H. Murphy of this valley, and Mrs. Myrtle Owen, of San Francisco- survive him, and in their hour of affliction they have the sympathy of all.
The funeral will take place from the Methodist church at 10 a.m. Wednesday November 18th.
