Santa Cruz Sentinel (August 7, 1921)

Soldiers Home, Aug 5, 1921

Ed. "Sentinel"- John Lunbeck of Soquel died here in ward fifteen in Soldiers' Home Hospital at 9 o'clock, Aug 5th. He had only been in the hospital about one week, having been brought here in a demented condition and practically helpless. The immediate cause of death was congested liver, super induced by senility

A son and daughter of the deceased were here early in the week making funeral arrangements, as his death was daily expected. From the time of his arrival till his passing he failed to rally or give but slight indication of consciousness. From information received in a long distance telephone message delivered hereon Sunday, it was learned the remains will be returned to his former residence for interment. The body has been embalmed and prepared for shipment. Comrade Lunbeck was a member of L. Co., the 5th Ill. Cav., under command of Captain Caldwell, who raised and organized the company and led it all through the war. Some twenty of my neighbor boys served in the same company and with Lunbeck. The regiment was almost constantly under active service and saw no end of hard service. Captain Caldwell declared that every man in the company was an excellent soldier and deserving of high praise and worthy honors but that John Lunbeck was the best soldier of them all.
