Santa Cruz Surf (January 19,1887)An Old Veteran
Peacefully passes away in the Solitude of His Chamber
Yesterday morning a littler after nine o'clock one of the guests of the Swanton House, in this city, was found dead in his room. He arrived at the hotel of the 15th inst. And registered his name as J.D. Loud. He was a well dressed, fine appearing many of apparently about 50 years of age.
In conversation with the proprietor of the hotel, Mr. Swanton, he spoke of being a Grand Army man and having served during the War of the Rebellion in a Massachusetts and subsequently in an Illinois regiment.
When found the body was lying at full length on the bed. He had removed his shoes and laid down without turning down the covers. The body was removed to Scott & Ely's undertaking rooms. A Coroner's jury was empanelled and the inquest postponed until tomorrow.
From the appearances death was the result of natural causes. A valise and $93.15 in coin were the effects taken possession of by the Coroner.
From the papers found among the effects of the deceased, we learned that he was a native of Plymouth, Maine, 50 years of age, and was a private in Captain J. A. Baldwin's Co., 1st regiment of Massachusetts Cavalry, and was discharged for disability on the 6th of July, 1865. Also a pension certificate, by which he was entitled to a pension of $16 per month. Letters were found from Granville Loud, Echo, Indian Territory, and from a sister residing at North Dixmont, Maine, named Rhoda a Twitchel.
He was a member of Newville Lodge, Colusa County, No. 205, F. and A.M. and will in all probability be buried by the fraternity of this city.
A certificate of deposit for $1,000 in the Bank of Gilroy dated in August last was among his papers.

Consigned to Relatives
W.B. Hobbs of Gilroy, brother-in-law to J.D. Loud, who was found dead in his room in the Swanton House on Tuesday, arrived by the noon train yesterday.
The body and the effects of the deceased were turned over to Mr. Hobbs, and were taken to Gilroy yesterday afternoon. The body will be buried beside that of his (Louds) wife who died in 1864.
