Elam Long Dies Suddenly
Answered Call of Death While Purchasing Medicine Today

Elam Long, one of Pajaro valley's early residents and a prominent member of the G.A.R., died suddenly this morning, a victim of apoplexy.

Mr. Long walked down town from his home between 8 and 9 o'clock and entered the City Drug Store to purchase some medicine.

When Mr. Reinhardt, the clerk, returned from the compounding department where he had prepared the medicine, he found Mr. Long dying upon the floor.

Dr. S.C. Rodgers was hastily summoned, but Mr. Long had expired before his arrival. The body was removed to Wyckoff & Aston's funeral parlors.

Deceased came to this valley in 1875 and located at Pajaro. Ten years of his residence here were spent as an employee of the Southern Pacific Company, and ten years in the service of the Loma Prieta Lumber Company. He was a faithful and industrious employee in each instance.

In 1898 he went to southeastern Monterey County, but at the end of a year returned here and took up his residence on a ranch in San Miguel canyon.

About a year ago he moved into town and since that time has lived on lower Union Street, where he resided at the time of his death.

The funeral will be held at 10 o'clock Monday, under the auspices of the G.A.R.

Among the member of his family that survive Mr. Long are his three sons, Allen, Charles and Russell P., and his daughters, Josephine, Charlotte and Elizabeth.

Remains Consigned to the Grave

The funeral services of the late Elam Long were held this morning at 10 o'clock from the First Presbyterian Church. The services were short, consisting of the usual service at the church and a brief service at the cemetery. Owing to the illness of Rev. E.L. Rich the services were conducted by Rev. E.B. Winning of the Methodist church. Besides a short sermon by Rev. Mr. Winning, three beautiful vocal selections were rendered at the church by Mrs. E.L. Rich and Miss Kuhlitz. A beautiful duet, "We'll Never Say Good bye in Heaven," was given at the I.O.O.F. cemetery, where the remains of Mr. Long were interred. The pallbearers were Abram Bardmess, Wm. DeHart, Henry C. White, Edgar Allen, Wm. Gordon and Francis M. Rowlee. Many friends of the deceased were in evidence at the funeral, among whom were several members of the G.A.R. The late Mr. Long was a member of this organization, having been a private in Company C, Eighth Minnesota Infantry, under General Sherman during the Civil War.
