Old Soldier Suddenly Dies
John S. Laney died in his door yard at his home in the Surfside addition at Vue de l'Eau on Wednesday evening. He lived alone surrounded with his cow, chickens, garden and books, somewhat of a recluse in his life habits. He did not make many acquaintances. Many years ago his wife died leaving him alone. Since then he has wandered about from place to place. About eighteen years ago he came to California and six years ago came to this county.
He was born in Ohio 72 years ago, where he has two sisters living. He was a soldier in Co. B, 92d Illinois Infantry during the civil war. He was a member of Wallace-Reynolds Post and will be buried by his comrades.
Ritualistic services will be held in SCruz/OMP Cemetery. His tent is pitched "On fame's eternal camping ground".
Death came to the old soldier suddenly while sitting on the steps of his little cabin. When found he was in a sitting position.
The coroner's jury brought in a verdict on Thursday to the effect that the deceased came o his death by an attack of hemorrhages of the lungs.
