DIED: Kitchen, In Santa Cruz March 30, Harvey Kitchen aged 72 years 1 mo, 27 days a native of Georgia. (Funeral will leave late residence 67 Pelton Ave., this Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock thence to Free Methodist church on S. Branciaforte Ave. Interment at SCruz/OMP.)

Death Was Due to Paralysis

H. Kitchens, who has resided in Santa Cruz for ten years, died yesterday afternoon at his home, 67 Pelton Av., the result of a paralytic stroke which he received at about 11 o'clock in the forenoon. He is the father of George Kitchens, the second hand dealer. He was a native of Georgia and leaves a wife and eight children as follows: Three daughters, Mrs. T. R. Hancock and Mrs. E.W. Sprague of Santa Cruz, Mrs. J.E.B. Barnum of Tulare, and five sons, S.H. and G.E. Kitchens of Santa Cruz, E.M. Kitchens of Tulare, W.H. Kitchens of Cook Wyoming, and Al Kitchens of Gardner, Montana.

Harvey Kitchens Memoriam

Harvey Kitchens was born in Cherokee county, Georgia, Feb. 3d 1844, emigrating with his parents to Cercy county, Arkansas, when three years of age. He entered the southern army at the early age of 18 years, serving in this capacity 18 months. Being a Union man, he then transferred to the Union army, where he served two and a half years, until the close of the war. In 1866 he was married to Miss Sarah Malinda Barnes. They celebrated the 50th anniversary of the wedding on March 22d this year.

Nine children have been born to them, eight of whom are now living, Mrs. Thomas Hancock, Samuel H. and George. E. Kitchens, and Mrs. W.E. Sprague of Santa Cruz; W.H. and J.A. Kitchens, the former living at Cook, the latter at Gardener, MT; E.M. Kitchens and Mrs. J.E. Barnum in Tulare, Calif.

Brother Kitchens was converted in Clay Co., Texas, in 1880, and united with the Baptist church, removing to Idaho, thence to Paris, Riverside Co. Cal., in 1892. He has resided in Santa Cruz since 1906, has been a faithful attendant and a devout worshiper at the Free Methodist church and Peniel mission, generally attending three services on Sunday.

Brother Kitchens was a friend to the poor and helpless, seeking in every way to supply the needs of widows and orphans with money and food, with which he was unsparing, thus exemplifying the life of Him who went about doing good. His hospitality was boundless and the hungry always received a welcome at his door.

This present large assembly is ample testimony to the love and esteem in which both the subject of this sketch and his faithful wife are held. Revs. Barnet and Mathews, Officiating Pastors.
