DIED: HAZELTON, in Santa Cruz September 5th, Francis Marion Hazelton, a native of Missouri, aged 59 years 11 months.

-- Comrades of the G.A.R. are requested to be present at Post rooms at one o'clock P.M. Thursday September 7th, to attend the funeral of our late comrade Francis Hazelton who was a member of Wallace-Reynolds Post 32.

Takes a Dose to End His Troubles
Francis Hazelton, an Old Soldier, Takes an Overdose of Morphine and Dies

In despair of ever recovering from bladder trouble, from which he had been a constant sufferer for several years, Francis M. Hazelton, an old soldier, took an over dose of morphine on Monday night and was found dead in bed by his wife Tuesday morning. In his trunk was a note asking that $10 which was coming to him from Daniel Ross, a neighbor, be paid to Mrs. Cox whom he was owing that amount. This note, which was dated Monday, together with threats he had made to end his life, point to suicide and the corner's jury rendered a verdict accordingly. There was a fully loaded pistol under his pillow, which he did not use.

Mr. Hazelton was from Springfield, and was 59 years old. He recently returned from a ten months stay at the soldiers' Home at Santa Monica and was a member of Wallace-Reynolds Post G.A.R.

He had been down town and had his quarterly pensions papers made out the day before his death, but had returned home complaining of his old trouble.

At the inquest, which was held on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. Hazelton testified that the dead man had threatened to kill himself several times during the past three months and that he had once threatened to kill her. With tears in her eyes, the sorrowful woman told the jury that her married life had not been happy, that she and her husband had never gotten along very well, in spite of her best efforts. They had been married twelve years and had three children, Elmer, Ralph and Herbert, the oldest being 12. By a former wife, who died 15 years ago, Mr. Hazelton had two sons, Edward in the hotel business in San Francisco, who is expected here for the funeral, and Frank, who is a member of the Theosophical settlement at Point Loma. Deceased was well known throughout the county as a competent millwright, having worked for Grover and Co. for many years.

The coroner's jury was composed of Henry Rhein, C.H. Hall, C.W. Hibbard, Albert Cox, W.E. Lynam, and T.D. Sargent. Mrs. Hazelton was the only witness and the jury gave a verdict of death from an overdose of morphine.

Funeral of F.M. Hazelton

The funeral of the late Francis Hazelton was held from Wessendorf Undertaking parlors on Thursday afternoon. Rev. F.K. Baker conducting the services uptown, and the local G.A.R. the proceedings at I.O.O.F. cemetery. Commander Wells read the impressive ritual of the old soldiers of whom a goodly number turned out.
