Charles L Hamlin breathed his last at his late residence on Spruce street at 2 a.m. Thursday, after a lingering illness of several weeks duration. The cause of his death was typhoid malarial fever.

He was born on March 20th, 1837, in China, Maine. When the war broke out he enlisted as a Landsman in the Sabine for one year. After serving out his time in the navy he enlisted on the 10th of May 1862, in the 19th Maine for three years, and was mustered out June 30th, 1865, at the close of the war. He was at the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. At Gettysburg he was severely wounded, for which he has been receiving a pension. He was also present on the ship Brooklyn at the capture of Fort Fisher. The deceased was a charter member of W.H.L. Wallace Post, No. 32, G.A.R., and served as Officer of the Day, Adjutant and Senior Vice Commander of that Post. He was also a charter member of John F. Reynolds' Post, No. 98, G.A.R., and at the time of his decease was Senior Vice Commander of Reynolds' Post, and a member of A.O.U.W. Before coming to Santa Cruz the deceased was engaged in business in San Francisco. For the past seven years he has been a resident of Santa Cruz, being the proprietor of a shoe store on Pacific Ave. He leaves a widow and two sons.

Editor's Note: A similar article from the Santa Cruz Surf of February 11, 1886 indicates that Charles L Hamlin also was present at the battle of Antietam, and that he re-enlisted in 1864.

Funeral Notice

The funeral of the late Charles L. Hamlin will take place this [Friday] afternoon from his late residence on Spruce St. Friends of the deceased are invited to be present. Members of the Grand Army Posts of this city and Santa Cruz Lodge No. 46 A.O.U.W. are requested to meet at their respective lodge rooms at 1 o'clock P.M. to participate in said funeral.

The funeral of the late C.L. Hamlin occurred yesterday afternoon, the body was escorted to the IOOF cemetery by Reynolds and Wallace Posts and the A.O.U. W. followed by a long line of carriages. Rev. M. Willet was the officiating clergyman.
