Watsonville Pajaronian (May 17, 1930)Samuel Hall, Civil War Veteran Dies At Advanced Age
Following an illness of only a week, Samuel S. Hall, Aromas resident, died today at the age of 81 years. Up to a week ago Hall was doing hard work, and appeared in the best of health, when complications due to his advanced age set in.
The death of Hall removes another Civil War veteran from our midst. He was a member of the local post, Grand Army of the Republic, having served throughout the Civil War. He was a member of Company D, 102nd regiment of Pennsylvania, and served in both the army of the Potomac and the army of the Shenandoah.
During the battle of Cedar Creek, he was wounded in the ankle, but returned to service as soon as the wound healed.
Following the war he came to California, where he again enlisted in the army serving at Fort Independence as a guide and scout for several years.
Twenty-eight years ago, Hall came to Aromas, where he has made his home ever since. When he was not busy on his farm he did carpenter and wood work. During his youth he was employed in a furniture factory, doing expert fancy woodwork.
A host of friends in this district will be sincerely grieved at the announcement of his passing. He was a member of the First Baptist church of Aromas.
The deceased is survived by this widow, Susan Hall, a son, Robert S. Hall, and a grandson, Robert W. Hall, all of Aromas.
The body is at Aston & Neal's Funeral Home, 609 Main Street. Funeral services will be held at the Aromas Baptist church at 10 o'clock Monday evening.
