DIED: GRAVES- In Santa Cruz Sept 12, Capt. S.F. Graves, aged 83 years, a native of Massachusetts.

The funeral of the deceased will take place from Wessendorf & Son's undertaking parlors, Monday afternoon, Sept. 15 at 1:30 o'clock. Friends and acquaintances of the deceased are invited to attend.

Captain SF Graves Dies at Daughters Home

Captain S.F. Graves who was a well known figure in shipping circles on the coast for many years passed away yesterday morning at the home of his daughter Mrs. George G. Byrne at 320 King St. where he has made his home for some years.

Mr. Graves was a wonderful man, alert and active until recently, and one who kept in touch with the world at large. He was born 83 years ago in Massachusetts, and came to California in 1868 by way of the Isthmus of Panama.

He came to Santa Cruz from Alameda county, ten years ago, and has been especially well known in circles of the old soldiers and the Masons. He liked Santa Cruz and loved to be here, where children, grandchildren and great grand children resided.

The greater part of his active life he was a seafaring man and was a captain, and during the war he served the Union in the United States Navy as an ensign, but for 30 years has been in retirement for active service.

He belonged to the G.A.R. and was a lifelong Mason, and had held his membership in Petaluma lodge for 40 years.

He was an artist of no mean ability, and having followed the sea for so many years, his children have some fine marines from the brush of the father. He delighted in photography and was a real artist with the camera and has some wonderful work. In politics he was an ardent Republican.

Besides his daughter, Mrs. Geo. G. Byrne, with whom he had been residing, Captain Graves leaves his wife, Mrs.. S.F. Graves, who resides with another daughter, Mrs. E.P Beamis of 112 Cleveland Avenue, this city. A daughter, Miss Anna Graves of Berkeley, and a son, A.M. Graves of Oakland, also survive. He also leaves 12 grandchildren and 12 great grand children.

The funeral, which will be held from the undertaking parlor of Wessendorf & Son, will take place on Monday at 1:30 in the afternoon.

Services Over Capt. S.F. Graves

Funeral services over Captain S.F. Graves were held yesterday afternoon from Wessendorf & Son's undertaking parlors, where the G.A.R. attended and relatives and friends.

The service was conducted by Dr. B.M. Palmer of the Congregational church and by the G.A.R. and "Rock of Ages" was sung by Miss Geraldine Hayes.

The burial was at the Odd Fellows cemetery and the pallbearers were all grandchildren, Ed Bemis, W.C. Byrne, Ed Bemis Jr., John Mowry, August Devitt and George G. Byrne.
