Word was received yesterday, at the U.S. Veterans hospital at Napa, where he had gone a short time before for treatment.

Mr. Gerber was born in Baden Germany, March 11, 1836, coming to this country when he was 11 years of age.

He came across the United States on foot, arriving in San Francisco in 1849. After living here a few years he returned east and was married in Davenport Iowa to Miss Elizabeth Long, on Dec 4, 1869. He was one of the old pioneers and had made his home here since his last return to California 16 years ago.

He leaves a wife and two children, one daughter Mrs. Mollie McElderry, living on Mission Street, and a son Charles C. Gerber of Burlingame.

When the Civil War broke out he enlisted from Oroville in Co K, 2d regiment of California Volunteers and saw much active service, being wounded in three engagements. He was in many battles and also took part in wars against the Indians in Nevada and the Indian Territory.

He was discharged at Camp Douglas, Utah, Oct 4, 1864. Mr. Gerber belonged to Wallace Reynolds post NO. 32 of this city and his wife is a member of the W.R.C. Strickland corps in Hastings NE. The funeral will take place today at 1:30 from the Napa hospital with full military honors.
