Tilman Fowler Dies at Home on N. Branciforte

Tilman Fowler died at the family home at 32 N. Branciforte avenue at 6 o'clock yesterday morning, following a prolonged illness of several years. He was born in Livingston, Missouri, January 16, 1839, and was 93 years, 4 months, and 15 days of age.

When 7 years of age he crossed the plains in a covered wagon with his parents, from Livingston, going to Gonzales, Texas, where he resided until he was 21 years of age, at which time he enlisted in the Confederate army from Waco, Texas. He served the four years of the Civil War under General Van Zant, Company A. 7th Texas.

He came to California in 1884 and was married. With his wife, he came to Santa Cruz 15 years ago, and resided here until his death.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Belle Fowler, and one son, Harold Lee of Berkeley, and seven grand children. Another son, Tilman preceded him in death by a year.

The body is at the Wessendorf Mortuary. Funeral arrangements await the arrival of the son who is en route from the Sierra Nevada's.

Rites Tomorrow for Veteran of Confederacy

Tilman Fowler, who died yesterday at his home at 32 North Branciforte avenue after an illness of a few days served in all the major battles of the Civil War with Company A of the seventh Texas infantry in the Confederate forces.

Enlisting in Waco, Texas, at the age of 22 years, he served under General VanZant and was with General Robert E. Lee at the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. He spent one year in federal prison, but managed to escape.

He was born January 16, 1839, in Livingston, Missouri, and when seven years of age migrated with his parents in covered wagon to Gonzales in the heart of the cattle country of the then independent state of Texas. Texas joined the union a few months later.

Mr. Fowler came to Santa Cruz in 1884 but after living here a few months moved to San Luis Obispo County and entered the cattle business, retiring in 1921. He had lived in Santa Cruz ever since.

Surviving him are the widow Mrs. Belle Fowler, and a son Harold Lee Fowler of Berkeley. One son, Tilman, died one year ago.

Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from Wessendorf's mortuary by the Rev. J.C. Carpenter.

Tilman Fowler Rites Are Held

Funeral services for Tilman Fowler were held yesterday afternoon at the chapel of Wessendorf's mortuary and were conducted by Rev. J.C. Carpenter of the First Methodist church. The Inurnment was at the Santa Cruz Crematory.

Fowler was a veteran of the Confederate army and served during the Civil War.

Tilman Fowler, aged 93 years 4 months 15 days died May 31, 1932 at 32 N. Branciforte. His widow was Belle Fowler. His occupation had been as a rancher, but he had not worked since 1915. Fowler was born in Missouri on January 16, 1839. His father was Levi Fowler, and the name of his mother is unknown. Burial: SC 15 CA 60 SC Crematory.

Tilman Fowler was born January 16, 1839 in Livingston Mo. In May of 1861 he joined Co A of the 7th TX Inf (also known as Gregg's regiment) of the Confederate Army. During the Civil War he rose to the rank of Sgt. and also served as an Asst. Surgeon. He was mustered out in May of 1865.

He worked as a farmer at Cholame, San Luis Obispo County and later moved to Santa Cruz where he died on May 31, 1932. He was buried at SC IOOF in the mausoleum.
