Old Soldier Dies on East Side
John Lawrence Eby, born near Logan, Hocking Co., Ohio, May 29 1835. He was educated in an academy and for five years taught school in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. While teaching in Athens, Ill., he married Harriet Riley, who died in Santa Cruz five years ago. When the war broke out he enlisted in the 7th regiment, Illinois volunteers and was given charge of a hospital. He participated in numerous engagements. After his army service he and his wife crossed the plains to California with his father's family by ox train and settled in Rohnerville, Humboldt. Cal, in 1865.
During the war his hearing was impaired and grew worse, until he was compelled to give up medical practice. For a number of years he conducted a drug store. He completely lost his hearing about 25 years ago. He moved to Santa Cruz about 21 years ago and built a home at 95 Windsor St., where he has since lived.
After his wife's death, his sister Mrs. Sarah Stubbs, came from Healdsburg and has taken care of him. For years he has been a cripple and could get about only in a wheeled chair. He was a member of Penn. Av. M.E. church, and always interested in all church activities.
On July 11 he fell in his home and broke his hip. He was a patient sufferer and thoughtful of his friends and those caring for him. His sister Mrs. Jewett, and niece, Mrs. Dustin of Stockton, have been with him and helped care for him since his accident, also his grand nephew, Jewett Dustin a student at U.C. Dental College and a niece, Miss Alma Jewett of Stockton. Dr. Eby died August 6 and was 86 years, 2 months and 8 days old.
