Santa Cruz Surf (June 27, 1918)A Grand Army Veteran Dies
Capt. Edwin Dewitt Doud, a veteran of the Civil War, died this morning at 37 Hanover street, where he has made his home and resided with his wife and daughter for over three weeks, having come here from Ben Lomond on June 3. He made his home in the mountain town a number of years and was highly esteemed for his uprightness and fine character.
He was a native of Michigan and lived to the good old age of fourscore, as he was 80 years old. He leaves a wife and two daughters. He was of the Eighth Illinois cavalry in the Civil War and was in the memorable and great cavalry charge under General Kirkpatrick at the battle of Gettysburg and Capt. Doud was one of the few that came out alive.
He was a member of the G.A.R. post at Mason City, IA. Of which Col. W.V. Lucas was at one time a member. He was also a member of the Loyal Legion. In religious belief he was a Christian Scientist.
