Editorial Notes from Robert L. Nelson (November 27, 2003)Military records indicate that John Copp; a 17-year-old resident of Manchester New Hampshire was enlisted as a private in Co. C of the 7th New Hampshire infantry on November 16, 1861. He was wounded and taken as a prisoner at Ft. Fisher, North Carolina and was mustered out at Concord NH on February 17, 1865.
We do not know when John Copp first arrived in Santa Cruz County but in 1885 he was running a boarding house at the Loma Prieta Lumber Company in Loma Prieta. A major fire occurred at the Lumber Company on May 13 which put 150 workers out of work causing a major financial setback to John Copp. The Santa Cruz Sentinel of May 14, 1885 noted "John Copp proprietor of the boarding house estimates his loss at $1600. He had recently laid in a large supply of provisions for the summer to feed the eighty borders staying at his place."
In 1890 John Copp was living on Ocean St. in Santa Cruz. F.M. Husted's City Directory of 1892 records a John Copp a Deputy Constable in the Branciforte District and a Miss Agnes Copp residing at 386 Ocean Street in Santa Cruz. It is possible that John's appointment as Deputy Constable may be related to his close GAR comrade Isaac Blaisdell being elected as Justice of the Peace in that district in 1892.
During his stay in Santa Cruz John Copp became very active in the Wallace Post of the GAR serving as its Quartermaster, Senior Vice Commander and in 1892 its Commander. Socially he hosted a post "Campfire" at his home and later transferred his GAR involvement to the Wallace-Reynolds post when the post were united in 1895. Within the new post Copp served as its Quartermaster, state delegate, and as member of the GAR school visitation team.
On March 21, 1901 the Santa Cruz Surf reported "John Copp and James Cowling left this morning for White Horse rapids in the Klondyke. Mr. Copp will run a hotel and Mr. Cowlings a bakery."
