Patriotic Soldier Responds to Taps
"Character Excellent, Service Honest and Faithful,"
is the Record He Would to Know is Written

G.S.P. Cleveland, born in Skowhegan, Maine, April 21, 1845, but whose home for many years past has been at his pleasant farm in the upper Amesti district, died yesterday as the result of a stroke of paralysis visited upon him some four months ago. He was aged 65 years, 17 days.

Deceased was one of those honorable, estimable citizens whose loss to the community is irreparable, yet whose manner was so unobtrusive that the good he did was never blazoned upon the high places in bold letters so that all who ran might read. Emergencies brought out the real strength of his character and he rose to meet them with a firmness, which could not be swerved.

He was a soldier, bred of soldiers, and it was his pride to reflect that five generations of his line had enlisted for the service under the American flag, the first, a great grandfather in the war of the revolution, and the latest, a son, George C., is in the Spanish American war. His own service was in the War of the Rebellion, he having answered the first call for volunteers by enlisting in the 26th Maine Infantry when he was but eighteen years of age. At the conclusion of his enlistment he joined the 2nd Maine Cavalry and served to the end of the war. His service was distinguished by loyalty and bravery. Like nearly all of the Maine volunteers he was an honored member of the G.A.R., and a Republican politically.

When the war was over he returned to industrial pursuits in his native state, but in 1875 came to California and entered the employ of the old Watsonville Mill and Lumber Company where he remained until 1880 when he engaged in the butcher business in this city, as a member of the firm of Leo Green & Co.

In 1882 he retired to country life and thereafter until his late illness conducted a farm in the Amesti district near Green Valley. In every walk of his life he was a citizen whose character would serve as a splendid example for the young to follow.

Besides a widow he leaves three sons, A. Lynwood, Charles, and George C., and a brother, Dr. W.S. Cleveland of Eastport Maine.

The funeral will take place from the undertaking parlors of Wyckoff & Aston Third Street. Interment in I.O.O.F. cemetery. It will be under the auspices of R.L. McCook Post No. 26, G.A.R. of this city.
