W.R. Springer left Wednesday for the Old Soldiers' Home at Sawtelle with Isaac Chesebro, an old soldier who is 89 years old and quite feeble.

Passes Away at a Ripe Old Age

Isaac Chesebro, who had exceeded the four score and ten mark, passed away at his home at 122 Wilkes Circle Wednesday night. He was the father of Mrs. W.R. Springer and Joseph Chesebro. Deceased was a native of New York and in his younger days a cabinet Maker.

Born in Madison Co., State of New York, February 6th 1821. Died in Santa Cruz, Cal., March 6th, 1912- 91 years old.

What a long and varied life; covering twenty four administrations- from Monroe's to Taft's beginning before the railroad and ending in the full fruition of the electric age- born, when the entire country west of the Alleghenies was one unbroken wilderness and California was unheard of. He had seen Uncle Sam's population mount from nine to one hundred millions and his area quadrupled. His early life was spent in New York State, where he was married in 1845, emigrating the next year to the then territory of Wisconsin with a population scarcely larger than that of Santa Cruz County, where he made his home for the next twenty three years. IN 1870 he went to Missouri, remaining there until 1892, when he came to Santa Cruz, Cal. He and his faithful wife journeyed together for sixty-four years, she passing away in 1910. Of this union four children were born, three of whom, Mrs. M.E. Darling, Mrs. W.R. Springer of Santa Cruz, and Mrs. Flora Crow of Campbell, Cal., together with eight grandchildren, survive him.

In 1846 he, with the late Dr. Parker, enlisted in the Mexican War, but was not called to the front, and in 1865 enlisted in the Civil War, serving until discharged in the following December in Co. H., Forty eighth Wisconsin Infantry.

The body was cremated and the ashes scattered on the placid waters of the broad Pacific.
