A Pioneer Gone

George Washington Chandler, a Pioneer and one of those solid men who built up the great West, died this morning at his late residence at the Storey home on High Street.

In early days he was prominently identified in this city and also at Pescadero, being interested in saw mills, timber claims, shipping and the lumber business. He retired from active business some years ago and for a number of years made San Francisco his home.

He was a member of the Santa Cruz Lodge of Masons and his funeral will be held under the auspices of the order and is to be private. The interment is to be at Cypress Lawn Cemetery, San Francisco.

He was a native of Maine, 76 years of age and leaves two daughters, Misses George and Lucy Chandler.

Editor's Note: A similar article from the Santa Cruz Surf on May 14, 1903 titled, "Death of Geo. W. Chandler" indicates that George Chandler was the brother of Lafayette Chandler, "one of the oldest and best-known residents of Pescadero." In addition, the article states that "The deceased always stood high as a man of integrity, morality and sobriety, and long and patiently bore his sufferings as the victim of chronic rheumatism."
