Civil War Veteran Dies at Home

Edward Simmons Carr, an old time citizen and a veteran of the Civil War and a resident for many years and highly respected, died yesterday at his home on the Golf Links road and adjoining the links.

Mr. Carr was born 85 years ago in Rhode Island and California has been his home since 1868 and Santa Cruz since 1870, and since that time his home has always been in the neighborhood of the golf links as he was employed for many years in that neighborhood, with the Kron Tanning company.

His place has always been well kept and he has of late years been engaged in truck gardening. He also grew good oranges and tobacco, as the property owned by him was most sheltered.

Mr. Carr served his country during the Civil War from its outbreak, and was mustered out at Frankfort, Ky., in 1866. During the war he served in both the army and navy and was under General Sheridan. Mr. Carr was especially known by the older residents and he had their goodwill and esteem.

Surviving him are a son Andrew, daughter Elizabeth Mary, a twin brother in Rhode Island and two other brothers.

Relatives reside in San Francisco and they are expected to be here for the funeral. The body is at Chase's undertaking Parlor.

Funeral of the deceased will be held from the Chase undertaking parlors Monday at 10 A.M. Friends and acquaintances are invited to attend. Internment in I.O.O.F cemetery.

Old Timers Attend Funeral

Funeral services over Edward Simmons Carr were held yesterday from Chase's undertaking parlors.

The old time friends came to pay their last respects and the service was conducted by Rev. Charles Leachman, of Calvary church.

The burial was at the Odd Fellows cemetery.

Edward S. Carr Provided for Son, Daughter

Clarence G. Dake has petitioned the superior court for appointment as executor and also for probate of the will of the late Edward S. Carr who passed away last Friday in this city. The estate does not exceed $10,000 in value and consists mainly of $4000 in Liberty bonds.

By the terms of the will which was made on March 21 1923, the sum of $500 is left to the son Andrew E. Carr residing on Runge lane in this city. The balance of the estate is left to the daughter Elizabeth Mary Carr, "for the period of her natural life, remainder to her issue, if any, and if she dies without issue living at the time of her death, then such remainder shall go share and share alike to my cousins Ellen Lynch and Katie Lynch of San Francisco, California, and Bessie Meyrick of San Francisco, California, daughter of Elizabeth Lynch deceased.". C.G. Dake is named as executor of the will by a provision in the document. The petition will be heard February 23rd.
