Veteran of Civil War and of Guatemalan Army Passes Away on Wednesday

General Thomas Browne Bunting died on Wednesday evening at his residence on Blackburn drive, after an acute illness of about two months, during which time he was unable to leave the house.

The General's death will be regretted by a large number of friends and acquaintances, who knew him for a kind and courtly gentleman, kind to all and a thoroughly good citizen. He had been ailing for about two years, and ever since he had an accident with a fractious horse about five years ago and had two of his ribs broken he had been in poor health. The immediate cause of death was heart and kidney disease.

The General was born in Crosswicks, NJ and was 74 years of age. He served in the Union army during the Civil War, in the Seventh New York Volunteers, and when that regiment served its time, he returned and organized a light battery of which he was captain.

On account of his knowledge of artillery firing he was chosen as an officer in the army of President Barrios (the elder of Guatemala and served several years in that army commencing with the year 1876).

He was very useful to President Barrios in instructing the gunners and the president made him a general.

With his brother Robert who lives with the family here, he spent a number of years in the leather business in New York City coming to California about 17 years ago.

He had one son by a former wife who visited him here last year. No children have been born to the later union, which has been a most happy one.

Mrs. Bunting has been guide and philosopher and friend to the General in his declining years, and she and Mr. Bunting will have the sympathy of the entire community.
