William Boggs Dies at Sawtelle

Word has been received from the south that William F. Boggs, after months of suffering at his home near Boulder Creek, passed away April 4 at the age of 93 at the soldiers home at Sawtelle, to which he had gone March 12. His funeral was held at the East Side Methodist church, which he had attended many years and he was buried in the family plot in the Long Beach cemetery. His funeral was conducted by the G.A.R., with the Rev. L.O. Bostwick officiating. Comrade Boggs was past commander of the post No. 181 of Long Beach.

He was born in Curvinsville, Pa., Aug 15, 1834. When he was 22 years of age his family moved to Illinois, where he lived until the war broke out, when he enlisted in the 11th infantry. At Fort Donelson he was wounded, which laid him up for some time and led to his discharge. Later he re-enlisted in the 44th Iowa infantry in the hundred-day service, and served out his time, for which he received a certificate of thanks signed by Abraham Lincoln and Secretary Stanton, which is now in his daughter's possession.

Comrade Boggs joined the M.E. church in 1851, and lived up to and enjoyed his church work, being especially active in Sunday school until too feeble to attend services. He leaves two children- Geneva Boggs of Boulder Creek, and a son E.A. Boggs of Des Moines; also grandson- H.L. Boggs of Des Moines; also one grandson H.L. Boggs and family, who spent the winter with him at Boulder Creek, and later returned to New York.
