Jerome D. Benjamin Has Passed Away

Civil War Veteran and Respected Resident Died Early Last Night Here

Jerome D. Benjamin, a well known resident of this city for eighteen years past, died at 5:25 o'clock last evening at his home at 71 Brennan street after an illness that had lasted for about three months. Illness incidental to old age caused his demise and he had steadily failed since he first took sick.

Mr. Benjamin was a native of Amsterdam, New York and was aged 71 years, 9 months and 6 days. He came to California in 1863 and soon after he came to the State he enlisted in Company B of the Sixth California Infantry, serving two years in the Civil War. After his service had ended in the army he lived in the southern part of the State and for several years was mail carrier between San Miguel and Cambridge. In 1876 he married Miss Lucy Aristine Young of San Luis Obispo and eighteen years ago the family removed to Watsonville. He carried mail here for several years but was forced to leave that line of work and seek retirement because of his infirmities and old age. He was a leading member of the local Grand Army of the Republic Post and had held an office in the post. His death will be mourned by all his post comrades and the G.A.R. is to conduct his funeral. Mr. Benjamin was highly respected by all that knew him and his death will be mourned in a wide circle as he was an estimable citizen in every respect.

Besides his wife he is survived by the following children: Mrs. A.J. Mackenzie of Escondido, Mrs. May Pound of Watsonville, Brs. Ben Rich of Watsonville and John Benjamin of Watsonville.
