Santa Cruz Sentinel (August 7, 1928)M. Banzhaf Passes Away
Michael Banzhaf, who died Saturday night was born in Gerstetten, Wurtenburg, Germany in 1835. He came to America when twelve years old, via sailing vessel, which took 65 days. He worked his way from Philadelphia on a canal boat to Williamsport, Pa., where he located and became a tailor's apprentice, following this profession all his active life. He married in 1860 Christina Shone. He served as a Union soldier in the Civil War; raising a family of eleven children, 9 boys and 2 girls, all of whom are living.
His sons are owners of the Old Homestead Bakery of San Francisco and are J.A.., Geo. W., F.A., H.A., E.T., and R.O. He made his home in Santa Cruz for the past five years with his daughter Mrs. C. P. Chandler and grandson, F.M. Chandler, who is connected with the Sweet Service Co., of this city. He is also survived by a daughter, Mrs. John Dean, of Wellton, Arizona. He has been a resident of California for 23 years. He became naturalized in 1858.
