Anthony's Residence was listed as Durand IL and he enlisted on September 9, 1861 as a Private. On October 31, 1861 he mustered into "C" Co. IL 55th Infantry. He was discharged for disability on March 31, 1862.
The 55th Ill. was made up principally from bodies of recruits raised in Fulton, McDonough, LaSalle, Grundy, DeKalb, Kane and Winnebago counties Illinois, and its members were largely young men reared upon farms. The regiment left Camp Douglas November 9, 1861, over the Chicago & Alton railroad for Alton, thence by steamboat for St. Louis, and arrived at Benton barracks November 11. Edmund Anthony apparently acquired his disability some time in March 1862, and had been discharged prior to the unit's engagement at Shiloh in April.
