Santa Cruz Sentinel (January 31, 1904)

Major J.R. Alvey, who spent a few years here, died on Jan 18th in San Diego. He was a native of Virginia and aged 74 years. In Richmond he was for many years in the dry goods business. During the Civil War he served as Quartermaster in the Confederate Army. After the war he went to England for his health. He came to California about twenty years ago.
