Early North Coast Ranchers

Along a section of Old Coast Road there is a series of locations all sharing the name "Majors" including roughly a dozen homes, a creek, and a canyon that empties into the ocean, known as Majors Beach. This beach was formerly known as Red, White and Blue Beach. Joseph Ladd Majors originally came to Santa Cruz in 1834 via the Santa Fe Trail. After his marriage to Maria de Los Angeles Castro he became a Mexican Citizen and was granted the Rancho San Augustin and Rancho Zayante. In 1845 he was elected as the first American Alcalde of Santa Cruz, giving him the role of mayor and judge. It is assumed the settlement, creek , and beach are named for him or his descendants. Alfred Baldwin was a pioneer who migrated from New York to Santa Cruz in 1847. The Baldwin Creek Beach is assumed to be named after him. However, there is some confusion, as Alfred Baldwin sold his farm located on the vicinity of the creek to Levi Baldwin, though they shared no relation.
